English Week 2020
English Week 2020
The annual English Week held on 27-30 October 2020 was full of activities, from movie watching to Halloween tongue twisters. The highlights of the activities are as follows:
English Readers Showcase
The English Reader Showcase was held during English Week from the 27th October 2020 to 2nd November 2020. The theme of the showcase this year was “The World of Amazing Encounters”. We hoped the students could ‘open their eyes; and broaden their minds’ through reading wonderful readers that were chosen by their English teachers.
There were 4 different areas in the showcase
- Display Corner
- Halloween Corner
- Famous & Successful People
- Teachers’ Recommendation
During the showcase, students were all motivated to visit the newly renovated library and choose books that they liked. Without a doubt, students were inspired by the ideas in the new books.
Halloween Celebration
Time flies, it is Halloween again and let us take time out to celebrate the festival. The English Department decorated the Study Area to bring a festive atmosphere to our campus and we prepared some lovely sweet treats for our students. On October 30th, the speaking activity was carried out for junior and senior forms during the 1st and 2nd recess breaks. A not so horrifying theme song “This is Halloween” was broadcasted to bring a spooky yet entertaining atmosphere to the school grounds.
As usual, students were encouraged to speak English to get candies on that day. In addition, the English Department challenged our students with Halloween tongue twisters this year, in hope that they could manage to overcome the difficulty of saying consonant clusters.
With the encouragement of our Principal and English teachers, it seemed that they were up to the challenge and they did attempt to say the tongue twisters fluently. We were all delighted to see our students aim for both speed and accuracy while reading the tongue twisters aloud.
‘Practice makes perfect’! As the old saying goes. You will not get your tongue twisted with sufficient practice! If you have not yet mastered the consonant clusters such as ‘pr’, ‘gl’, ‘pl’, ‘cr’, keep trying the tongue twisters! Happy Halloween 2020 and enjoy learning English in a fun way!
Plastic Free Seas Educational Seminar
On 30th October 2020, it was our honour to have Plastic Free Seas to share with our senior students the importance of protecting the ocean. F.6 students gathered in the mini school hall and attended the face-to-face seminar. Due to the COVID situation, F.4 and F.5 students joined in online.
Our guest speaker, Ms Mimi Law, discussed the problems micro-plastic bring to our ocean, how plastic marine pollution affects our life and how we can help solve the issues. Our students were all shocked by how terrible plastic marine pollution is not only in Hong Kong but all over the world. Some of them even promised to join future beach cleanup campaigns. It is hoped that our students will continue loving, caring and respecting our earth.
